Got backyard poultry? Or thinking about it?

Your new best friend should be Backyard Poultry magazine, the expert resource!

Dear Friend,

A couple of weeks ago, there was some terrible squawking coming from our chicken coop in the middle of the night, and the entire family came flying out of the house in our pajamas, yelling as loud as we could to scare off what we all knew must be the local raccoon.

Well, we scared off the raccoon, all right, but we discovered that it had gotten hold of the leg of one of our pretty Rhode Island Reds, Ms. Penny, who was in a separate cage outside the coop. Poor Ms. Penny’s leg was broken in two places, and it was a complete mess.

The local avian vet said it would probably be best to put her down. “It’s harder to heal a broken leg on a hen than it is on a horse,” she told us. Now, Ms. Penny is like a pet to my children, and we just didn’t want to give up on her. And that’s exactly when the latest issue of Backyard Poultry arrived in the mailbox.

The answer to a dilemma

Believe it or not, right there in that magazine was an article about a chicken whose leg had been broken in a fight with another hen – and I learned exactly what they did to try to save their chicken! (Yes, we chicken lovers are a bit obsessed.)

Popsicle sticks featured heavily in this tale, along with bird antibiotics and plenty of massaging. In the end the hen’s leg became gangrenous and had to be removed, but the hen was quite cheerful about the whole thing and even today hops around happily on one leg.

We did much of the same things that family did, and we got really lucky, because Ms. Penny’s leg actually healed! I can’t tell you how happy the kids were the day we took off the last Popsicle stick. And we would never have attempted it without Backyard Poultry magazine.

I hope this tale gives you hope for your next backyard flock disaster, and I also hope you’ll give Backyard Poultry magazine a try. I know Ms. Penny is glad we subscribe!

Best,
Andie M.
