One of the neatest things about having a desire to be as independent as possible is the many things you learn to do on your own. And come those cold winter days, you’ll be happy to know how to make lip balm at home.

You don’t need much in the way of specialized equipment for these. Just a pan, a spoon, your ingredients and something to put it in. The container to keep it in can be as simple as a small plastic container with a lid. (Dare I say Tupperware?) If you desire, you can order lip tubes made just for this purpose. They may run you anywhere from 13 cents to 35 cents, depending on where you get them. Your ingredients are pretty simple, but if you are too far out in the country you may have to order them. There are many places that supply them online. Most of them can be picked up at your local discount or drug store. When you get ready to do these, by all means, let the kids help. Just like cooking, they need to keep stirring and stay away from the hot stove. But mine are always eager to help and see the final product, and they like to give them as gifts. These are great to make at Christmas time for stocking stuffers. I will start with the simplest of them. Put your ingredients in a saucepan and melt, stirring constantly so it doesn’t burn.
