Tractors & Farm Equipment
Perseverance, resourceful and a sense of humor. We’ll call those your mental homesteading tools. But what about equipping the homestead with actual tractors and tools? The #1 consideration should be quality when establishing any farm tools list.
Few farmsteads function well without a tractor or utility vehicle. You’ll discover there are quite a few older model tractors out there, and they were so well built, many of them still work. Before selecting a tractor, consult a good tractor comparison guide. You should consider the jobs you need to tackle, budget and size of your homestead before you buy. In addition to a hard-working tractor, could you function on the farm without a trusty pick-up and a new or used livestock trailer?
Which tools to procure or build for your farmstead depends on the size and make-up of your homesteading land. Homesteaders agree there are some tried-and-true tools you shouldn’t pass on. Where would you be without a trusty garden hoe (and varieties of specialized hoes,) a garden fork, a long-handled shovel, a rake, loppers and hand trimmers for gardening tasks?
Hammers, screwdrivers, pliers and needle nose pliers, pipe wrenches, crescent wrenches, tape measures, socket sets, a pry bar and adjustable wrenches should also make a home in your toolbox.
Versatile power tools will serve you well. These might include a cordless drill, reciprocating saw, miter saw, circular saw and a top-rated chainsaw, to name a few. What might surprise is you are the “tools” you’d never think to add until you started homesteading. What about a baby monitor? If you have an expecting or sick animal, or just want to check in periodically, then a good wireless baby monitor is a great thing to have. Who knew?
As with all tractors and tools, and regardless of style, overall quality of materials and construction is important.
